10 Things NOT to say to an Agent or Editor, #4 (+VBT Update)
#4: “This is the first of a trilogy.”
Writers often don’t realise it but when you submit work to an agent or editor , what you are asking is for them to invest money in you. And you are a risky prospect. Even if they love the work and can see financial potential in it, they know from long experience all the many things that can go wrong. Publishing is a tough game — for everybody involved — and many a sure thing has failed to come through.
As a first author, you are particularly unproven territory. Asking them to take three times the risk only makes them three times more likely to say no.
Submit one (truly great and irresistible) book at a time.
UPDATE: LOVERS’ HOLLOW VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR
As you know, our VBT for Lovers’ Hollow by Orna Ross kicked off on Sunday last, on Carolyn Smailes blog. It was a big success with Orna answering questions from numerous writers about Lovers Hollow and about writing and publishing in general. We had a lovely note yesterday from Caroline, who was really pleased with the turnout, saying: “…I think that the VBT was one of the most successful that I’ve ever seen. You kept over 1000 people here for the full time. Your responses were spot on and people were keen to learn more…”
