"Meeting Your Audience "

A One-Day Workshop for Writers & Writing Teachers

Saturday, May 10th 2008.

Devised & Presented by Mia Gallagher

The book is out and now you’re standing at the edge of the stage with one hundred expectant faces looking up at you. Your legs are trembling, your voice is shaking and all you can think is: How the hell am I going to get through the next twenty minutes?

Meeting Your Audience is an intensive one-day workshop designed for published writers who wish to explore effective "live" interactions with the public, through readings and performance. It is also ideal for creative writing teachers who want to expand the range of their teaching and workshop material.

It’s a given that most performers get nervous. However, experienced actors and public speakers have learnt to use techniques which let them transcend their nerves and give fantastic performances. Based on some of these techniques, Meeting Your Audience offers:

  • practical exercises to build vocal and physical awareness and dexterity
  • useful tips for entrance, posture, mic use etc
  • pointers for developing performance skills in the long-term.

By encouraging a whole-body, collective approach to reading, this workshop will not only hone performance skills. It will also allow writers discover and explore a whole new way of creatively relating to both their work and their public.

Mia Gallagher is a writer and performer. Her debut novel ‘HellFire’ received international critical acclaim and the Literature Award in Irish Tatler’s Women of the Year 2007. Her short stories have been published in Ireland and abroad and have won the START short fiction award as well as being nominated for a Hennessy Award.  As a performer, Mia has trained extensively in Ireland and France and since 1998 has toured internationally with original theatre productions.

Cost: £100.
